The Necessity of Repentance

We have all seen many ways of presenting the gospel, so that people can come to know Christ. However, I have found many of them to be incomplete. If a presentation leaves out an essential part of trusting Jesus, it could lead the person to believe he or she is saved when they are not. That is a terrible deception to put on another person. We must be careful not to do this. Peter's invitation to come to Christ in his message to the crowd after the lame man by the Temple was healed gives us one of the main things that is left out of many gospel presentations. (Acts 3:19) Please, let's take a few minutes to make sure we all never make this mistake.

Peter admonished the crowd to "repent and turn back." He emphasized the necessity of repentance for salvation. We must repent of our sins, which means we must turn away from our sins and go toward the Lord. We turn back to the way God designed for us to go from doing things our own way. We can't turn to the Lord without turning from our sins, because His ways are the opposite of sin. Once we make this turn in our hearts, then the Lord can wipe out our sins. However, without that genuine repentance, God will not wipe out our sins by His grace. Repentance and faith must go together to be saved from our sins. So if a person does not repent as a part of coming. Jesus for salvation, there can't be any of their sins wiped out, and thus no salvation.
