Spreading the Aroma of Jesus in Every Place

As believers, we know Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior. This relationship changes our lives. We are new creations in Him. We grow in the Lord Jesus, and God has promised to always lead us in Christ's triumphal procession, as we live for Him. As a part of that blessing, we spread the aroma of the knowledge of Jesus in every place we go. (II Corinthians 2:14) There is an historical background to this verse we all need to know, so let me explain.

The Romans had taken over most of the world in Jesus' time, but they continued to conquer new places and to put down rebellions in their kingdom. Every time the Roman army defeated an enemy, they had a parade in the main city. The parade had the victorious general in the lead with his troops following behind, then at the end were the remaining soldiers of the defeated foe. As the parade went through the city, a strong incense was burned that was unique to these triumphal processions, so that every person in the city knew that Rome had conquered them. This is the analogy Paul used for us to see God's truth.

We are more than conquerors in Christ. As we follow Him, we live the abundant Christian life. The more we follow His leadership and grow in Christ, the more we exude His character, because of the indwelling of the Spirit. Therefore, every person with whom we have contact gets the fragrance of the knowledge of Jesus by how we act and how we talk. They see Jesus in us, and we spread the knowledge of Him to others. I pray we will all give off the most fragrant aroma for Jesus, and many will come to know Him through our words and actions.
