Doing the Lord's Work is Never in Vain

Sometimes when we do a particular task we think, "I wonder if this will do any good?" We consider whether or not what we are doing might be a waste of time. If we think it will just be ignored or not be helpful, we just won't do it, very often. However, the Lord's work is never that way. When we do His work, it is never in vain. It will either accomplish His will, or we can be sure He will recognize what we have done in some way. (I Corinthians 15:58) This is Paul's conclusion, because he was sure all believers will be raised to spend eternity with the Lord, and what we have done for the Lord will all have been worth the effort we made. This truth ought to shape how we live our lives each day.

Are there any earthly things we do that will have significance forever? I don't believe that is so. No matter how great or powerful we are and what we are able to accomplish, when we are gone and this world is burned up, all our earthly labors will be forgotten. However, even the smallest thing that is done for the Lord's work will be remembered and rewarded by God. This is what Paul showed us, and it is what Jesus said. Jesus told us to lay up treasures in heaven where moth and rust can't corrupt them, and thieves can't break in and steal them. That is why the apostle Paul admonished us to be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord. The work that God gives us to do for His kingdom is the only thing that will last forever, and it will never be forgotten. (Philippians 2:10) See what I mean? This should affect our thinking and our daily schedules, so that we always put a priority on doing what God has saved us to do. Then, we will live a life of eternal significance and worth.
