The Promise of the Rainbow
One of God's most famous promises to all of us is the promise which is represented by the rainbow in the clouds of the sky when it rains. It should be precious to us, but I am sure it was a tremendous blessing to Noah and his family after they lived through the world-wide flood, which killed all of the living creatures. God promised us that He would never again bring such a flood on the earth to destroy everything that is alive. (Genesis 9:14,15) The rainbow is a sign to us and a reminder to Him of this permanent promise. We should praise Him whenever we see a rainbow.
God is so good to give us promises that we can trust, which will always come true. Then, at times, He even gives us a sign to confirm His promise, so that we will never forget it, and we can rejoice whenever we see the sign. God promised the shepherds that the Savior had been born in Bethlehem. The sign He gave them was that they would find the baby, wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger. That was a strange place for a newborn baby, but it was a sure sign that God had fulfilled His promise. I imagine that each time those shepherds saw a manger after that, they were reminded of God's promise to find the Savior. God can and does do the same for us today.
Also, God makes some promises that apply to all people of all times, like the promise of the rainbow. When He makes a permanent promise, that is a special blessing. We should thank Him and tell others what God has done to show them His graciousness toward us. Then, they can come to trust Him and live by His promises, too.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 10-13.
