Impossible Promises

Has God ever given you a promise that seemed completely impossible? That is what He did for Abraham. When God changed Abram's name to Abraham, and Sarai's name to Sarah, He was preparing to work His promise in a humanly impossible way. Their new names affirmed what God would do to give them offspring. God had promised that He would make Abraham a great nation, but that was 24 years earlier. After 11 years Sarah thought she would not be able to have a son, so she gave her servant Hagar to her husband. She had a son, but that was not God's will. They were going by human logic. Then, 13 years later God came to change their names and affirm that Sarah would have a son with Abraham. Sarah was 99 and Abraham was 100 years old. (Genesis 17:19) This was impossible physically, but it was not impossible to God.

God gave them Isaac in their old age to prove a point. They could trust Him to do the impossible, if that is what God promised to do. Abraham and Sarah both laughed when they heard this was going to happen. That is why God told them to name their son, Isaac. His name means "laughter." Then, every time they thought of their son, they would think of the impossible promise God fulfilled. Would we have faith like Abraham had to believe that God would keep His promise? I hope we would. We need to know that with God anything is possible. Therefore, if He gives us an impossible promise, we should praise Him and expect it to happen. Then, we will really have something to tell others, just like Abraham and Sarah.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 18-20.
