Avoiding Anger and Strife

Strife is not good for us. It brings great stress into our lives, and it can cause us all kind of problems. Even some physical problems are caused by stress, such as obesity and high blood pressure. I think most of us realize that eliminating anger and strife from our lives would be a wonderful accomplishment. Therefore, we need to hear the truth from these proverbs. (Proverbs 15:1,18) They are so practical, and they are possible for anyone.

Whenever we are tempted to answer with a harsh word, we need to stop and decide to give a gentle answer instead. When we do that, we turn away anger, instead of inciting it. Of course, we have to ask the Lord to help us control our tongue, but He will, if we will submit it to Him. Also, we need to cultivate the ability to be slow to anger, instead of being hot tempered. When we are slow to anger we calm a dispute, while being hot tempered stirs up strife. We need to convince ourselves that even though we think we need to blow up in some situations, we really don't. We can be slow to anger and still respond correctly to an upsetting situation. Therefore, we should make it a goal in our life to give up using harsh words and being hot tempered, so we can get rid of the destructive anger and strife in our life.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 16-18.
