In the Shadow of Your Wings

The Bible is full of word pictures that add to our understanding of God and His ways. David was very poetic as he wrote his psalms under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, so he used many word pictures to get His point across. When David was explaining how he was being attacked on all sides as the ruler of God's people, he confessed that his soul took refuge in the Lord. He said that he took refuge in the shadow of His wings, until the destruction passed by. (Psalm 57:1) That gives us a great picture of God's gracious protection.

A mother hen guards her chicks from harm. If there is any danger, the little ones come close, and she covers them with her wings. Under her wings it is dark and warm. They can't hardly even see the danger, and they are held close to their loving mother until the danger is passed. That is how God does us many times, if we will run to Him as destruction comes our way. He graciously and gently reaches out to gather us close to Himself and shelter us. The question is, "Will we take refuge in Him like David did, or will we try to face the dangers of life on our own?" He is waiting to gather us in, if we will draw near to Him.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalm 58-60.
