To Make Atonement

Aaron and his sons were the priests in the temple of God to offer sacrifices which would make atonement for the people of Israel. (I Chronicles 6:49) This was a vital ministry because everyone sinned, and they needed forgiveness of their sins and atonement. Most people understand forgiveness, but do we understand atonement? Let me explain.

The easy way to understand atonement is to break it into "at-one-meant." It is a way that we are made at one with God again after our sins have separated us from Him. In the Old Trstament this was done by the animal sacrifices offered by the priests. The sinful person would lay their hands on the animal while the priest cut its throat. The person confessed his sins over the animal, and he realized his sins caused the death of an innocent animal. It led him to repent of the sins and walk with God once again. This had to be repeated fairly often.

In the New Testament Jeaus is the once for all perfect sacrifice that forgives our sins and brings atonement. He died for all the sins of the world. When we repent of our sins and trust the Lord who died for us no rose again, we are forgiven, and we are brought back to God to have a relationship with Him forever. That is the ultimate atonement to which all of the animal sacrifices pointed.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Chronicles 8-11.
