David's Blessing for Solomon
When David was very old, he turned over the kingdom to his son, Solomon. He did this after preparing the materials to build the temple. He wanted to help his son as much as possible with following God's will. However, he did something else to help Solomon that was even more important. David pronounced a blessing on his son. (I Chronicles 22:11) Just think with me about how speaking a blessing over our children will help them.
David was concerned that his son was young and inexperienced. He knew being king was a huge challenge, much less building the glorious temple for the Lord. He knew that God's blessing was the main thing that Solomon needed to be successful as king. Therefore, he spoke this prayer as a blessing over him. He asked God to be with him and to prosper him. He also asked God to be there as he built the house of the Lord as God had said. David knew that if God would answer that prayer of blessing, Solomon would be fine.
Also, think about the positive affirmation it is to speak a blessing over our children. It shows them that we care, and it shows them where to look for all they need. It is a great way to lead them to take responsibility, and to show them that they can do whatever God will give them the power and direction to accomplish. I pray that we will practice speaking God's blessings over our children and watch to see what He does for them.
Tomorrow, I intend to read I Chronicles 25-27.
