What the Law says about Love

Sometimes, we think that Jesus was the first one in God's Word to emphasize love. That is not true. The Old Testament Law admonished the people of God to love their neighbors as they loved themselves.(Leviticus 19:18) In fact, it even commanded them to love strangers in the land the way they loved themselves, too.(Leviticus 19:33,34) Love is not a New Testament doctrine. Love is of God, because God is love.

I hope all of us will read this passage and consider our own hearts. Do we take vengeance on others in any way? Do we hold grudges? Do we really love our neighbors and strangers as we love ourselves? If not, we are falling short of God's standard. We must stop long enough to ask Him to correct this deficiency in our character. We must repent of this sin and tell God we want to love others like He does. That is the only righteous option for any believer.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Leviticus 20-22.
