Telling Our Stories V

I want to tell one more story in this series of stories, and then, I will try to tell a story every once in a while the rest of the year. I have told about God's clear leadership to show us His will. I have shared how God provided for us financially over the years, too. Now, I want to give you a personal story.

I started running again when we moved back to Stockbridge. I needed to run because I had gained weight and my cholesterol was too high. I was blessed by the Lord to be able to reduce my weight and my cholesterol in a short time. I give Him all of the credit for helping me with this. Some people say that I have a lot of "will power." My only power is "His power." I lost about 30 pounds and my cholesterol went from 276to 141. Since then, He has given me the power to keep it off and to keep running.

All of a sudden I started having a sore place come up on the side of my foot. It was so sore that I could not run as well so I went to see my Physician's Assistant, Coral. She looked at my foot, but as she looked at my chart, she asked how long since I had a physical. I told her that I had not had one, but I would schedule one later. She would not let up. Finally, I gave in, and we set up a date for my first real physical. My foot got better by the way, as well.

The physical was very thorough, and I was found to have an elevated PSA. I followed up with a specialist, and he found that I had prostate cancer by doing a biopsy. It was in the early stages, though, so I had surgery on December 31, 2003. Since then I have been cancer free. Praise the Lord!

God did not choose to heal me directly from the cancer. He caused my foot to hurt. Then, He put it into Coral's heart to be persistent about my physical. Then, He directed me to an excellent doctor to do the surgery, and I was completely healed. It was just as much the work of God, as if He had caused the cancer to disappear supernaturally. He protected me, and He used other people to do His will. I have found that is how God works very often. That is why we need to be careful to obey Him when He lays something on our hearts.

What would have happened if Coral would have taken my first no and given up on getting me to have a physical? The cancer may have grown and spread before it was found. I could have died by now. I am not scared of dying, but I want to stay here as long as God has something for me to do. I want God to use me the way He used Coral to save my life. I want to help people find eternal life in Jesus Christ. I want to point them to take a spiritual evaluation, so they can find the sin problem, and I can tell them how to have it removed from their lives once and for all. Then, I want to help them run with the Lord the race of the Christian life until they go to heaven.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Mark 6-9.
