Coming to the Lord as an Adult

It has been my privilege to lead many children to the Lord over the years. Many times they grew up in church, so they already knew the Good News of Jesus Christ at an early age. Their hearts are tender, and they are ready to turn away from sinful things and trust Jesus with a child-like faith. It is a wonderful thing to see a child who is really convicted by the Holy Spirit and comes to know the Lord.

Then, I have spoken to a number of young people who have trusted Christ. It is pretty different from the children. They have come to hear the Gospel one way or another, and they are seeking to know the truth. Usually, they have some questions, but they are ready to make a commitment to Jesus as Lord and Savior. They may have some struggles as they work out their salvation in their lives, but it is a blessing to see a teenager who comes to know the Lord. There is such a great enthusiasm and drive to do the right thing.

With adults it seems to be a totally unique situation of events for each person to bring them to know the Lord. Many were taught about Jesus as children, but they never fully trusted Him. The Holy Spirit convicts them of their lack of trust, and they are faced with humbling themselves to admit their need. Once they do that, it is easy to trust Christ. Others were not raised in church at all, or they had parents who were bad examples of how to live. They find themselves doing the best they can in life, but they have no understanding of the truth, so they make many mistakes. Finally, they realize there must be a better way to live, and they seek out the truth from friends or family. These people are often eager to embrace Jesus, because of all they have been through. Also, there are those who do not seek the Lord, but they are sought after by other believers. The believers share the Gospel, and the Holy Spirit begins to convict them of sin in a powerful way. These people have to decide if they are willing to surrender to Jesus as Lord. Their lives might be going well, but they are confronted with the best life. They have to choose the Lord's way or their own way.

I long to see more and more adults come to know the Lord. I know the statistics say that it is not very probable that an adult will choose Jesus as Lord. However, I believe if all of us, as Christians, pray and share we can see a multitude of adults come to know Christ.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Hosea 4-6.
