Walking on Water
There are some things that are just humanly impossible. We can't fly without assistance because of gravity that holds everything in place. However, Jesus ascending back up to heaven after His resurrection by going right up through the clouds. We can't walk on water because it is not dense enough to support our weight. However, Jesus walked on water as He went to rescue His disciples in a storm. We can't forgive sins, but Jesus can because He died and rose again to pay for all of the sins of the world. We are limited in what we can do, but Jesus is able to do what is impossible for us.
Peter experienced this in a very personal and dramatic way. He was able to walk on water. (Matthew 14:28,29) Then, Peter called to Him, "Lord, if its really You, tell me to come to You, walking on the water." "Yes, come," Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. I believe we can learn a lot from Peter's example here, so that we might be able to do impossible things, too. Let's take a minute to consider this account.
When Jesus walked on the water in the storm, the disciples thought He was a ghost since it was impossible for a human to walk on water. Peter did not think that. He believed it was Jesus, and He believed Jesus was Lord of all. His faith is what enabled Him to walk on water. Therefore, we need to ask ourselves if we have faith in Jesus to use us to do the impossible things. If we do, we need to ask Jesus to show us His will. We can't just do any impossible thing we want to do. Jesus has to call us to do the impossible. Then, we do what He says in faith.
Peter's faith enabled Him to trust Jesus in the middle of the storm, so that he climbed over the side of the boat. How many of us would have climbed over the side of the boat? That is putting faith into action. James says that faith without works is dead faith. We will never do the impossible with dead faith. We must act on our faith by doing what Jesus calls us to do. Then, Peter actually walked on the water toward Jesus. Some people want to emphasize that he sunk after the looked at the wind and waves. I marvel that he walked on water, if only for a few minutes. Let's not think of failing. Let's have faith in Jesus, knowing He can hep us do anything that is His will, Then, we can see great things by His power, like walking on water, flying, and seeing other people saved..
Tomorrow, I intend to read Matthew 15-17.
