The Benefits of Spiritual Unity

Many churches are very divided. They have people who will not forgive each other. They have people who are critical of one another instead of loving each other and encouraging each other. God never meant for that to happen in the fellowship of the church. He has commanded us to love each other as Christ loves us. If we will do that the results will be amazing.

We have an example of this in Acts 6. There was a division in the church over the ministry to the widows. The problem was solved when the people agreed on the deacons doing the service and the apostles concentrating on prayer and the ministry of the word of God. (Acts 6:7) Once the unity returned, the word of God spread, the number of the disciples multiplied, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. Let's think about these benefits of unity.

When God's people are in unity, they do not spend their time gossiping and thinking about negative things. They focus on the Word of God, and they use their time to spread the Word to others. That is what God wants us to do all of the time, so the Word can bear fruit as it goes out. Then, the number of the disciples multiplies. It is not just slow growth. It is exponential growth, as believers win people to Christ and those new believers win other in their families and friends to Christ. That is the only way we can ever win the world to Christ.

Also, when there is great unity in the church, there is spiritual power to even see the difficult people come to Christ. In Acts 6 a great number of priests came to Christ. They were the descendants of Aaron, Moses's brother, and they were very faithful to the Old Testament laws. However, by the power of the Spirit they were saved, and the same type of revival can happen today, if we will all pray together, agree together, and do the Lord's work together.
