Getting a New Heart

When i was in 9th or 10th grade at Avondale a friend named Eddie Dunaway, who worked at a hospital and later became a doctor, brought a surgery training film to our biology class. It showed an open heart surgery in graphic detail. It was hard to see the cutting and the blood, but it was great to think the doctors could fix a heart or even do a transplant. That is what God does for us spiritually.

God told Ezekiel that He was going to restore Israel. (Ezekiel 11:19) He promised to give them a new heart and to put a new spirit in them, too. He would take out the heart of stone and replace it with a soft heart of flesh. That is what makes the great change in everyone who trusts Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

God gives us all one heart so we can see how He thinks and feels, and we can be in one accord with all other believers. It is such a blessing to meet another believer from another culture and find out we have the same spiritual heart because of God's surgery. That is where our unity comes from.

Also, it is so good to have the soft heart God plants in us. It makes us sensitive to His voice.  We must always listen and obey, so our new soft heart will not become stony again. We must do whatever it takes to be humble and submissive to the Lord, and we will be greatly blessed.
