Looking on Jesus Whom they Pierced

There are times in life when we do something, but we really don't understand the severity of what we are doing. We have a wrong view of what is going on, so we go along with an action that we later regret. When we come to understand our terrible mistake, we are grieved. We are moved even to tears, because we wish we could go back and do it over again.

The Jewish leaders and the Jewish people decided to have Jesus put to death and Pilate went along. They did not know Jesus was Lord of all, who had come to save them. (Zechariah 12:10) One day in the future God will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and of pleading, so that they will look on Jesus whom they pierced, and they will mourn like one mourning for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. What a day that will be.

I am not sure how this will happen or when it will happen, but I believe exactly what this verse says will happen one day. At some time in the future Jesus will show Himself to the Jewish people. They will know that He is the Lord of all, and they will realize their sin of having Him nailed to the cross. Yes, I know that God used their sin to bring about the perfect sacrifice of His Son for our sins, but it was still a sin done with rebellious hearts.

Once they see Jesus, they will mourn for Him like the Only Son that He is, the Only-Begotten Son of the Father. They will weep bitterly, and they will turn to Him as Lord and Savior. I believe the Bible teaches that all of the Jews, all Israel, will be saved at that time. (Romans 11:25-27) So God is not done with Israel, and we need to keep praying for them and the peace of Jerusalem during this volatile time. One day we will see them turn to Jesus.
