June 2 - Psalms 59-62
In these four psalms David expresses many of the same truths we have been reading in the other psalms, which shows their importance. My pastor used to say, "If something is in the Bible once, it is important, and if it is repeated, it shows it is even more important to God." I believe he was right. We need to know that God is our defense against those who would harm us, and that He will punish them. We need to realize that God is the strength for the battles of our lives. We need to constantly worship Him for His greatness and power.
However, there is one theme here that stuck out to me this morning. David mentions it in two ways. He speaks about God bringing confusion to bring defeat. In Psalm 59:11 David asks the Lord to scatter his enemies, who are portrayed as dogs in a pack. David knows that if the enemies lack unity, they are much less of a threat to him. Then, in Psalm 60 David is upset because God had forsaken His people in battle. He comments that God had made them drink the "wine of confusion." This is another reference to God sending a lack of unity to bring defeat, but this time it was on His own people. This should show us that confusion or a lack of unity is a sign that God is not blessing, but that something is wrong. It is good for us to pray for God to confuse our enemies, but when we see confusion in our own lives, it must be a cause for concern. God wants us to work together for His purpose and His glory. That is why David goes on to refer to God as his "Rock" and to allude to the fact that he needed the stability of God and His strength. If we stand on the Rock and fight the enemies together in unity, God will always give us the victory. If you see confusion and a lack of stability, stop and ask God why.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 63-66.
