Able to Offer Good Counsel
We all need for someone to counsel us from time to time, and there are times when others call on us to give them counsel, too. How are we supposed to know who to ask for the right counsel? How are we supposed to be sure that we are giving the correct counsel to others? We need to be able to answer both of these questions, so we don't get led astray, and so we don't lead others in the wrong way. I believe there is a good answer to these questions for all of us.
The Bible is clear on this subject because God knows how vital it is for our well-being and for the well-being of our family and friends. (Psalm 37:30,31) "The godly offer good counsel; they teach right from wrong. They have made God's law their own, so they will never slip from His path." There are several aspects to these verses that we need to consider, so we know how to get and give good counsel.
We need to go to a godly person when we need counsel. A godly person is a person who is set apart from this world. They live like God would have them to live, and they apply themselves to knowing the Lord very well. The godly will always give good counsel. They will teach others right from wrong by telling them what God says is right and wrong. They do not give personal opinions; they give Scripture to back up what they say. Therefore, we need to strive to be godly people, so we can know God better and help others in need of good counsel.
So, how does a godly person become godly? They make God's law from His Word their own law. They embrace what God has told us, instead of doubting His Word. When they are fully committed to doing this, and they have lived by God's law for years, we will be able to see that they are on the right path in life. We will know we can go to them for guidance. We will see that they are consistently living in God's will, so they can show it to us. We need to be godly, so we can counsel others, and so we will not slip from His path either.
