Intuition and Instinct

Sometimes I run across a verse when I am reading my Bible in a different translation that really makes me think. That is why I read the Bible in different translations each year. I believe the translators have a reason for using the words they select to convey the meaning, and I try to check out the original language whenever there is a question. Today was one of those days. The NLT used 2 words that I have not seen in the other translations, but I believe they add some meaning which is helpful.

When Elihu got finished addressing Job, God broke in. He started asking Job questions since Job had thought he was wise enough to convince God of his innocence and that he was being punished wrongly. (Job 38:36) One of God's questions was, "Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind? I believe these 2 words will make us think and give us a good perspective on what God does for us. Let's dive in.

The word for intuition here is usually translated wisdom, but it is not the main Hebrew word for wisdom. It means an inner wisdom or insight that leads us to know what is right apart from studying the situation for ourselves. That does sound like intuition to me. Who gives intuition? It can't just be from chemicals in our brain. Intuition is given by God to enable us to see things in advance and know what to do before we study everything. I believe there is such a thing as a "woman's intuition." I have seen ladies who could tell about a person's character after a short visit or a few details. That has to come from God.

Also, the word instinct here is usually translated understanding. It is an understanding that produces action. I believe that is instinct. Where does it come from when we know just what to do on the spur of the moment?  It has to be built in by God. I know we all have the "fight or flight" instinct when something dangerous happens. No one has to tell us to defend ourselves or to get away quickly. Both intuition and instinct are powerful proofs that we did not just evolve, but God created us, and He gives us special abilities as he sees fit.
