God Owes Us Nothing

When we do a job, we feel like we are owed some payment for our time and effort. I can understand that way of thinking. We make a contribution, and our employer benefitted from it, so the company owes us. However, we can't say that about everything we do. When we do something for God, He doesn't owe us anything. I believe this is a vital truth that we all must learn to really understand God and to be happy in our lives.

God made this point to Job when He was questioning Job. I think He did it because Job was feeling that God owed him something, since he had lived a good life and done God's will. Therefore, God wanted to make a point for Job and for us. (Job 41:11) God said, "Who has given Me anything that I need to pay back? Everything under heaven is mine." I pray we will all stop for a moment and let this verse sink in and take root in our hearts.

I can't do anything in my life that adds anything to God that He doesn't already have. Yes, we can serve Him and do just what He leads us to do, but God could have done the same thing Himself without us. He was just giving us the ability to be a part of His work and to be blessed. God is fully self-sufficient. He doesn't need anything. He desires a relationship with us because He loves us, but we don't complete Him in any way by relating to Him or serving Him.

Remember what this verse clearly states. "Everything under heaven is mine." He created everything. He is the sustaining power behind it all. Everything we have has come from Him. Our life's breath, our energy to do things, our intellect, and everything else we have came from Him. Therefore, when we use His stuff to do His will, He owes us nothing. On top of that, He gave Himself to die for us, so we could have eternal life. We owe Him everything, instead of Him owing us anything.
