Loyalty

Loyalty is a character quality that is rare today. I believe there are several reasons for this lack of loyalty. When people are selfish and want their own way, they find it hard to be loyal to another person because they might have to do something they don't want to do. Also, people are not as self-disciplined as they used to be, so they just don't follow through on their commitments like they should. However, when we find loyal family members, friends, church members, and neighbors, we need to treasure them well.

It took a long time and a lot of help for David to evade Saul and finally become king of Israel after Saul's death. One vital factor in David's rise was all of the faithful warriors who gathered around him to fight for him. Those from Benjamin and Judah were his kin. (I Chronicles 12:18) Amasai, the leader of the Thirty bravest warriors told David, "We are yours. We are on your side, son of Jesse. Peace and prosperity be with you, and success to all who help you, for  your God is the One who helps you." Then, David let them join him when he saw their loyalty to him, and he made them officers.

There are several important aspects of loyalty for us to consider. We must strive to be loyal in our character, but we should not be loyal to everyone we meet if we find out that they are not worthy of our help and cooperation. If we are loyal to the wrong people, we can be dragged down into sin with them, so we must be discerning. The best situation is when we know that the Lord is the One leading the other person, like Amasai said about David. Then, we can give them all of our loyalty.

Also, we need to be a person like David, a person who is of such noble character that people are attracted to us, and they desire to be loyal to us, even before we know them very well. We all need help in our lives like David needed help. We need others to join us and to be faithful to help us. I believe we will have plenty of people to help us, if we will be the kind of person who deserves their loyalty. Then, they will help us to have the peace and prosperity we desire.
