Keeping Our Promises
There are times in our lives when we make promises to other people. At that moment we really mean what we promise. However, sometimes we get lax, and we don't follow through on what we have promised. It is not that we don't care. It is just that we forget to keep our promise. That is not the right way for us to live. We need to be sure and keep all of our promises.
David had made a promise to Jonathan and to his family. He promised to treat them with God's faithful love. After he became king and was settled, David remembered his promise. (II Samuel 9:3) David asked Ziba, one of Saul's servants if anyone in Saul's family was still alive, because he wanted to show God's kindness to them. Ziba told him that one of Jonathan's sons was still alive, and he was crippled in both feet. Then, David kept his promise, as we should all do.
I wonder how many times we have promised to pray for another person, but we have failed to do so? We should never let that happen. Either we should not make that promise, or we should do whatever it takes to make sure we pray faithfully for them. Then, we should even keep checking with that person so we can see how they are doing, and how we should continue to pray for them. Of course, this extends to other promises we make, too.
I believe this also goes for all of our deep friendships. Just like David and Jonathan were committed to showing God's faithful love to each other and their families, I believe wee should be faithful to keep up with those friends over the years and over the miles. We should find out their needs so we can pray for them and help them with God's kindness. I believe God will bless us for being that kind of friend and keeping the promise of friendship with others.
