Spiritual Markers

There are things that happen to us in life that we need to remember. Because of that we have things that help us remember just what happened and when it happened. We have our birth certificate and our marriage certificate. When we graduate from high school and college, we get diplomas to frame and remind us. We even get awards from our work and have plaques to remember them. However, the most important things to remember are the spiritual milestones in our life.

Jacob was leaving Canaan and going back to his parents land to find a wife and to be safe from the anger of his brother, Esau. As he slept, God came to him in a dream and reaffirmed the covenant he had made with Isaac and Abraham. (Genesis 28:18) "The next morning Jacob got up very early. He took the stone he had rested his head against, and he set it upright as a memorial pillar. Then, he poured olive oil over it." Jacob made a spiritual marker for himself and for others.

I believe that there are times in the life of every Christian when God speaks to us or shows us something very clearly that is very significant for us. These times give us direction, and they draw us closer to God, just like God did for Jacob. We don't know when these times are going to happen, but when they do, we need to put down some kind of marker, so we will never forget what God said or did. It could be a journal entry, or it could be a physical marker at the place it happened. We just never want to forget.

Then, we need to review those spiritual markers from time to time. As we do, we see where God has brought us from, and it can give us insights into where He is leading us to go in the future. These markers keep us grounded in what we know for sure when things might seem blurry to us. Also, when God sees that we are putting down spiritual markers, He knows that we are serious about hearing from Him and following Him, so He is more likely to give us more of these encounters with Him.
