Our God-Given Banner

Today, we use banners for a lot of reasons. Many businesses use them to advertise or to catch people's attention as they pass by their location. I have seen banners in people's front yards or on their porches to tell what organization they belong to. We have a banner at our church which we put out to invite people to come for our worship services. However, these are all banners made by people. I wonder what kind of banner the Lord gives to us, as His people?

David spoke of a banner in a military context, as his troops were fighting to defeat an enemy. (Psalm 60:4) He proclaimed that God had given a banner to those who fear Him that it might be displayed because of the truth. In this sense the banner was a sort of flag on a pole around which the people could gather before going to battle. God gave the people who feared Him this banner, so they could be unified in Him and win a great victory. We can do the same today.

I believe our banner is the cross of Jesus Christ. God gave Himself for us, so we could have our sins forgiven and have fellowship with Him. Then, we could have fellowship with others who fear the Lord. When Christians stand together in unity, we are stronger, and God can give us the victory over the enemies of the gospel. However, it is up to us to take the banner He has given us and lift it high for all to see, so they will come to Christ and join God's army.

All of this is for the purpose of displaying the truth of Jesus and the gospel. There are so few people who know Jesus today, so few who know the Good News. It is up to us to proclaim the truth in unity, so all the world can come to Christ and Satan can be defeated by the power of the Spirit. I know David was pointing to a military victory, but I believe the same principles apply for us to win a great spiritual victory now.
