The Fire of the Lord Fell

It is amazing to see God act in power to prove to us, as humans, how great He is. This is a common occurrence in the Bible. God has had to prove Himself to humankind over and over again since He created Adam and Eve. This is because people have a hard time believing in God, instead of following false idols of their own making.

The prophet Elijah saw that Israel was overrun by the prophets of Baal and other false gods. He knew that something had to be done, so He set up a confrontation with 450 prophets of Baal. Whoever could call down fire from heaven by the power of their god or God would prove that their God was the true God. (I Kings 18:38) So Elijah called on God, and the fire of God fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust; and it licked up the water in the trench that Elijah had used to soak it all down.

That was a powerful miracle from God. It took two things for that miracle to happen. It took God being a personal God who hears our prayers. It could only happen if God cares about us believing in Him and not other gods. It also was dependent on God being powerful enough to send down His fire at the right moment. He was able, and it happened.

The other thing that it took was a person who had faith that God could and would send down the fire of the Lord at the right time and in the right way. God responds to our faith. He loves to prove to us and to others how much He is able to do if we will just believe. So the question for us today is, "Do we have faith that God can still do those kinds of miracles today?" If so, let's ask Him how He wants to act to reveal Himself, and let's call on Him to do it for those around us.
