How Awesome is This Place

I believe the word "awesome" is overused by many people today. It has come to mean that something is great or notable. However, it should be used only when something inspires awe in the eyes of the beholder. There are not many things that really do that, but being in the presence of Almighty God is always awesome.

When Jacob was escaping from his angry brother, Esau, from whom he stole the blessing of his father, Jacob, He had a famous dream. We call it Jacob's ladder. He saw a ladder to heaven with angels going up and down. (Genesis 28:17) Then, he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place. This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." Just imagine what Jacob felt at that point.

Jacob had sinned by lying to his father, but God still chose to bless him and give him a glimpse of heaven. He was afraid because he could sense the power and majesty of God by what he saw. Any time any of us come into the presence of God, we will be afraid. We will be overwhelmed by His glory, authority, and power. It humbles us before Him, as it did Jacob.

We need to seek the Lord in such a way that He will see our humility and our love for Him. Then, He may choose to reveal Himself to us and give us a glimpse of heaven, too. Then, we will know for sure that God is in His house. We will want to draw near to Him, and He will reassure us that there is a way to heaven through Jesus, so we can be secure in our hope, like Jacob was.
