Our Spiritual Circumcision

Circumcision is a surgical procedure done on boys to cut away some skin. The reasoning is that it is unneeded skin, and it can cause health problems if good hygiene is not practiced. The Old Covenant called for all Jewish boys to be circumcised on the 8th day of life as a sign of the covenant God had made with them. Of course, it did not bring salvation, but it pointed them to the One God.

Under the New Covenant, we have a new type of circumcision that is a spiritual procedure. (Colossians 2:11) When we come to know Christ by faith, we are circumcised, but not by a physical procedure. Christ performs a spiritual circumcision by cutting away our sinful nature. There are probably many Christians who are not aware of this significant act.

We are all born with a sinful nature, because it was passed down to us after Adam's sin in the Garden of Eden. This sinful nature leads even the youngest children to do wrong and sin. Because of this, Romans 6 says we are all slaves of sin before we come to Christ.

However, when we trust Christ, and the Holy Spirit comes to live in us, the sinful nature is put to death; it is cut away. We are no longer slaves of sin. We are free to do God's will in the power of the Spirit. Yes, we still have the flesh, the world, and the devil to tempt us to sin, but in God's armor we can defeat them every time.
