Testing God
Tests can be very good for us and others. When we take a test, we see how much we are able to do a particular thing. When we test others, we see what they are thinking or what they are willing to do. However, testing God is not a good thing. There is a good reason for this ban on testing God, too.
When Jesus was tempted by Satan to throw Himself off of the Temple and let the angels catch Him, He wouldn't do it, even though Satan quoted Scripture to entice Him. (Luke 4:12) Jesus responded to the devil. He said that the Scriptures also say, You must not test the Lord your God." Let's think about why testing God is not good.
It is not right for us to ask God to do something, just so we can see if He can or will do it. That shows a lack of faith in God. We have some doubt in our mind about God's ability. That doubt leads us to want evidence of His power. Instead of seeking evidence, we need to trust that God is all-powerful and all-wise, so He can do anything that is His will.
Also, we must not do something ourselves to test to see what God will do for us. Will He save us from harm? Will He provide what we need? That is no way to treat the Lord of the universe. He is not at our beck and call. We are to trust Him, and we are to do what He tells us to do, not think up things for God to do for us.
