Sing to the Lord a New Song

Did you notice all of the references in the Psalms about singing a new song? It comes up over and over again. It is a command, and it is a good thing to do. I wonder why there are so many of us, as Christians, who do not like to sing new songs? That attitude seems to be the opposite of what is presented in God's Word. It could be we get comfortable with the songs we know, and it doesn't take much concentration to sing them. However, it might be that we like certain songs of a particular style or time in our life. Neither of these reasons is a good reason to disobey the command of God. (Psalm 149:1) The psalmist had it right, as he was inspired by the Holy Spirit. We should always be ready to praise the Lord. That is what hallelujah means in Hebrew. We should sing a new song to the Lord and lift up His praise in the assembly of the faithful as we worship together. Why is singing new songs good? Let's think about it.

When we sing a new song to the Lord, we learn new truths in a new way. Since God is infinite, there is always something new to sing about that would help us know Him better. Also, when we sing a new song, we have to think about the words and the melody. Yes, it does take more concentration, but that is good. We can't just be on "auto-pilot." We have to think about the words and what they mean. Then, once we have sung the song, we have a new way to praise the Lord. God never wants us to stop praising Him or run out of ways to sing to Him. Therefore, let's choose to obey the Lord, and let's enjoy singing new songs as we worship. After all, that is what we will be doing in heaven, so we want to be ready to praise the Lord well, as we worship around His throne together. (Revelation 5:9)
