In Your Thinking Be Mature

Many people have a hard time thinking through things and coming to the right conclusions. In school, we call this having critical thinking skills. That is why we give students problems to solve, and we have experiments. These things require us to use our brain to think clearly and see reality, not a distortion of what is right. This is true for us, as believers, too. What we believe and what we do is so important. This is why the apostle Paul gave an admonition to the believers in Corinth. (I Corinthians 14:20) He told them not to be children in their thinking, don't think like a child thinks. Yes, in evil be infants or babies, but in thinking be mature, think like adults. This is a great principle for all of us, as believers.

When children think, they are often very quick to jump to a conclusion. They do not often gather facts before deciding on a course of action. A lot of times, children just accept what is said on face value, and they blindly follow what an adult or another children tells them. All of these characteristics are damaging to us. We end up believing the wrong things or doing the wrong things, and we get hurt. We must make it a point to stop thinking in those ways. However, when it comes to evil, we need to be like babies. When it comes to evil, we want to be very innocent of it. We do not want to know about how to do it, and we do not want to pursue it at, all. We want to concentrate on what is right and think on those things. The goal is to be mature in our thinking. That means we should think logically and deeply about things. We should not rush to judgment or be pushed into doing things quickly. We must not be impulsive, but we must be determined to ask the Lord to show us what we should believe and what we should do. This takes more time, but it is worth it. Immature thinking leads us to sin and failure in so many ways. We must put it away, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our thinking, so we will be mature in it.
