Exalting Ourselves Over God

This world tells us to assert ourselves. All around us we see pride being displayed by all kinds of people for all kinds of reasons. Many of us think if we are going to get ahead in life, we must exalt ourselves. It seems to be a virtue to let others know how capable we are, especially when we are able to do something outstanding. This leads to an unrealistic view of our value as a person. That is just as bad and having low self-worth. It leads us not to trust the Lord, but to trust in our own intellect and power. That is the downfall of many people, even believers. We need to stop and think about what God said through Isaiah. (Isaiah 10:15) Should the axe boast itself over the one who chops with it? Is it right for a saw to exalt itself over the one who uses it. What about a wooden club or rod; should it think it is able to do the work by itself? Of course, each of those notions are absurd. That gives us an idea of why we do not need to exalt ourselves.

None of us has any power apart from what God has given us. We would not even be alive, if not for His grace and plan for us. We could not learn anything, if He had not designed our brains in such a marvelous way. If we ever accomplish anything, God deserves the credit. We are just a tool in His mighty hands. Yes, God does use us. Sometimes, we are able to do things that seem impossible. When that happens, we must be humble and admit that without Him we could do nothing. (John 15:5) In fact, we need to get up every morning and pray for God to use us as His tool. We should submit fully to Him and ask for His power to do His will for that day. Then, we have a realistic view of our worth, and we know that we are just tools, not the Master Builder.
