The Fire of God Fell

Elijah came on the scene in Israel. He was God's man for that time to confront King Ahab about his horrendously sinful ways, as he worshiped Baal and promoted Baal worship with his wife, Jezebel. Elijah announced a showdown to Ahab between him and the 450 prophets of Baal. They built an altar on Mt. Carmel. The God who answered by sending fire to burn up their sacrifice would be clearly seen as the True God. Of course, the prophets of Baal failed, but Elijah went above and beyond. He even covered his sacrifice with water so that a trench around the altar filled with water. Elijah prayed, the fire of God fell, burning up everything, and the people fell on their faces in "awed worship" of the True God. (I Kings 18:38,39) What a spectacular show by God. However, I believe God is still in the business of showing himself to us today, too.

God loves everyone. He wants us all to enjoy a close, personal relationship with Him. We are sinful and cut off from God by those sins we have committed. Therefore, God comes to us out of His great love. He confronts us about the false gods we have chosen to serve. He reveals Himself to us in unmistakable ways, just like He sent the fire for Elijah to show Himself to the people then. Yes, it may not be fire, but God has promised us that Jesus is the True Light, who enlightens every person who is born into this world. (John 1:9) That is why we should all fall on our faces before Jesus in awed worship and proclaim Him as the True God. If you have not decided to trust Jesus as Lord of your life, please, listen to the Lord speaking to your heart by His Spirit. (John 16:8-11) We all hear that conviction, and we need to choose Christ before it is eternally too late.
