A Muddied Spring or a Polluted Well

When some things get dirty or polluted, they can't fulfill their purpose. That is a tragedy. I have tasted cool, clear spring water in the Rocky Mountains. It is very refreshing and nourishing. However, I would quickly pass up a pool of spring water that had been muddied. It would not be a good source from which to quench my thirst. Also, a nice well is wonderful. The water is tasty and healthy. The same well when it has been polluted can very very unhealthy or even deadly. When we see how the Lord told Solomon to use those two word pictures, it may surprise you, but it shouldn't. (Proverbs 25:26) Let's see what the Lord compared to these two things.

Christians are to be the light of the world. We are to point people to the truth and to the Lord by what we say and how we act. We are to be the salt of the earth, too. Our life should be a witness to others who do not know the Lord, to draw them to Him by our actions and our words. If we fail to do this, we fail to accomplish our purpose as believers. That is why the Lord told Solomon that a righteous person who yields to the wicked is like a muddied spring or a polluted well. When the dirt and pollution of sin are brought into our lives by compromising with the wicked, we are muddied and polluted. The temptation is to be liked by others or to be accepted. Therefore, we act like them, or we do what they want us to do, instead of doing God's will. We care more about what people will say about us than what God thinks of us. Then, we become useless to God, and we cause unbelievers to think that there is no difference between believers and non-believers. That leads them away from God and eternity in heaven. This type of failure brings God's judgment on us, because He knows how vital it is for us to be clean and pure before others, so He has to lead us back to Himself through punishment and restoration.
