Godliness with Contentment

Contentment is an essential part of godliness. If we are not content in a godly way, we will fall into many temptations created by wanting and loving money. However, if we have godliness with contentment, it is great gain. It is very profitable for us. (I Timothy 6:6-8) Let's think about what Paul told Timothy.

We brought nothing into this world, and we can't take anything out. Therefore, why should we make material possessions and money a priority? It doesn't make sense to emphasize something that is temporary and lose what is eternal in the process. Instead, we should look at what we need in life. We need food and clothes to live. If we have those we should be content with our possessions. Then, we can focus on godliness and pleasing the Lord.

I know this sounds extreme to some people. It is not extreme, at all, though. After all, what is the only thing that truly satisfies our soul completely? It is our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He satisfies our body, soul, and spirit, mind, will, and emotions. If we try to seek satisfaction in any other way, we distract ourselves from what is really effective, and we end up sinning against the Lord. Therefore, we have missed the goal of godliness and pleasing our Lord.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Timothy 1-4.
