A Murky Spring and a Polluted Well

What kind of feelings do you have when you read the words "a murky spring and a polluted well? It does not make you want to drink the water from them does it? It makes you very suspicious of what is in the spring or the well. The Bible says that is the effect of a righteous man who falters before the wicked. (Proverbs 25:26) I don't think I can overstate the damage done when a Christian sins openly before unbelievers.

People are looking for any reason not to believe in the Bible and in Jesus as Lord and Savior. When a righteous person, a believer, falters by committing a sin that is well known to others, the Devil uses that to place doubts in the minds of people about the truth of the Bible and reality of Jesus as Lord of all. They are turned off like when we look at a murky spring. They stay away from us and our message like we do a polluted well. They think we are filled with corruption, even though it may be just one blatant sin. That is why staying close to the Lord and allowing the Spirit to lead us to holiness is so important. When we are holy, we are set apart from sin, and we are set apart to do the right things. When a believer leads a holy life, the unbelievers are made thirsty for what we have.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 26-28.
