Guarding Our Eyes

David knew one of the keys to living a holy life with a pure heart. (Psalm 101:3) He was determined to guard his eyes from anything wicked or sinful. He had decided that he loved the Lord so much that he had to hate the things that could lead him to fall away from the Lord. Therefore, he was determined not to allow any of those things to enter his eyes or cling to him. What about you?

We are very influenced by what we see with our eyes. Those things enter our minds, and our minds effect our hearts. This is especially true for men, who are visually oriented. We must be vigilant to keep from allowing anything God says is wrong to enter the eye gate of our lives. This is difficult, but possible. The only way this will happen is to hate evil as much as we love the Lord. If we only love the Lord, and we do not hate sin enough to turn away, we will end up falling away from the Lord.

That is exactly what happened to David, himself. He broke his own rule when he looked at Bathsheba bathing on her roof. That led to adultery, murder, and a falling away from the Lord that affected his whole family. We must follow this key in our lives and never violate it to stay pure hearted and close to the Lord.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Psalms 102-105.
