Worthy Offerings

David made many bad decisions in his life, but there is no doubt that he understood what it took to really worship God in a worthy manner. He regularly spent time with the Lord in the mornings, as he prayed and declared his dependence on Him. He wrote worship songs that are still sung today, because of their truth and expressions of praise to the Lord. Also, he knew about worthy offerings, and he applied that principle when he made burnt offerings to the Lord to stop the plague, which was inflicted because of his prideful choice. (II Samuel 24:24) Let's look at what he told Araunah.

David would not allow Araunah to give him the threshing floor and the oxen for his burnt offerings. The reason was that he would not give the Lord that which cost him nothing. In other words, the offering is not an offering, if it costs us nothing. Also, if it is not of substantial value, it does not show God any respect or worthy worship.

Think of this. What if we bought our spouse a gift from the dollar store for our wedding anniversary? What if we picked dandelions weeds out of the yard to give our wife flowers? Are those worthy offerings? Let me say it plainly, neither of those gifts show any real commitment or love, because they would not cost us hardly anything at all. Therefore, when we go to worship God, and we give a very small offering, it is an insult to God. Our offerings should show how special and worthy God is of all of our commitment and love. After all, Jesus gave His blood and His life for us.

Tomorrow, I intend to read I Kings 3-5.
