Comprehending God's Works

There are some things about God's works that we will never be able to comprehend. Elihu knew that truth, as he set out to answer Job.(Job 37:5) However, he proclaimed that he was "perfect in knowledge." The fact is that no human being is perfect in knowledge, only God. When we believe we see everything perfectly, we fall into the trap that Elihu fell into. We become judgmental toward others, because we believe we can clearly see what is happening in them and to them. Unless God gives a person special prophetic insight into things like this, no one can make these judgments by his or her own knowledge.

We hear it all of the time. Someone will say that Jesus is returning at a specific time, even though the Bible says no one knows the day or the hour of his return. We hear people diagnose the problems of another person and confidently proclaim God's solution for them. Then, later we find out that they were wrong. That puts a bad taste in the mouths of unbelievers toward Christianity. We must be careful not to play God. It is very tempting sometimes, but it is always wrong, unless we have a direct word from Him to deliver prophetically.

Instead., we should quickly admit that we are not God, and there are things we will never comprehend. Then, we should encourage everyone to trust God, even when they can't understand what He is doing. We can and should always do that because we know that God is always loving and kind in His actions. His motivation is for our good, just like it was in Job's case. He will be more than fair toward us, and He always acts in love, because He is love. Therefore, we do not have to comprehend God to love Him and trust Him.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Job 38-41.
