Keeping Our Promises

David and Jonathan were such good friends that they made a covenant with each other. A covenant is a promise. We could also call it a contract or an agreement. However, the word promise brings out the meaning of what David and Jonathan did. They promised to take care of each other and to look out after each other's families, if something happened to one of them. That is a noble promise, and after Jonathan's death, David kept his end of the agreement. David found out that one of Jonathan's sons was still alive. His name was Mephibosheth. David sent for him to be brought to his home, and he provided for his needs for the rest of his life. He allowed him to eat at his table, and he restored the land of Saul to him, so servants could work the land a give him an income.(II Samuel 9:7) I believe David went all out to honor his promise to Jonathan, don't you? I think that pleased God to see David's faithfulness.

We make a lot of covenants or promises in life. We should strive to be people of our word. Whatever we say, we should do, even if it ends up costing us more than we thought it would. When people get married, they promise to love each other and to care for each other until they die. God watches to see if we keep that promise, and He blesses us if we do. When we get saved, we make a promise. We enter the New Covenant with Jesus. We pledge our love and allegiance to Him as Lord of our lives forever, and He pledges to forgive our sins and take us to heaven. I know we all expect Jesus to keep His part of the promise, and He does. However, we should really consider how we are doing with our part. Promises are very important to God.

Tomorrow, I intend to read II Samuel 10-12.
