Promises Fulfilled

By the time of Joseph we can clearly see how God was fulfilling His promises to Abraham. It took 25 years, but Abraham and Sarah had the son promised by God, Isaac. Then, Isaac was blessed by having his son Jacob to carry on the covenant God had made with him and his father. Jacob had 12 sons, and these sons were blessed to become the 12 tribes of Israel. During their stay in Egypt God multiplied them into a great nation of people. Finally, God led them back to the land God told Abraham that his descendants would possess. We can see how God was blessing Israel and cursing those who cursed Israel. It is amazing how God carries out His promises.

The one part of His promise to Abraham that took a little longer was the promise to make Abraham's descendants a blessing to all of the families of the earth. However, we see the beginning of God's fulfillment of that promise in Genesis 49:10, "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to Him shall be the obedience of the people." When Judah blessed his sons before his death, he had a special word for his son, Judah. He told him that kings and lawgivers would come from his family, until Shiloh comes. This is a clear reference to Jesus. He was of the tribe of Judah. He was of King David's line. He was a lawgiver in the sense that He showed us God's truth. He brought peace or rest, which is what Shiloh means, and the people were to obey Him. This is a great description of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would be a blessing to all of the families of the earth.

God keeps His promises. Jesus is our King, and when we obey Him, we are truly blessed. God is so good!

Tomorrow, I intend to read Genesis 50 and Exodus 1-2.
