November 5, 2006 - Jeremiah 34-36 and Hebrews 2

We all need to ask ourselves why we do what we do and why we believe what we believe. The basis for all we do and believe should be the Word of God. The Bible is God's Word to us, and it is the inerrant revelation of His will for us. We really miss God's will, if we fail to obey the clear teachings of the Bible.

In Jeremiah's day the people knew that God had commanded them to set their Jewish slaves free every 7 years. Moses wrote that in the book of Deuteronomy. However, they had not been obeying that command. King Zedekiah told the people to obey this command, and they did, but only for a short time. Then, they took back their slaves. This made God furious. They had deliberately broken the covenant for selfish reasons. Therefore, He told Jeremiah to use the Rechabites as an example. They would not drink wine, because Jonadab, one of their founders, told them not to drink it. They followed the commands of a man faithfully for many years, but God's people would not obey His clear commands. This was why God was having to punish Israel and send them into exile. However, He gave them one more chance. He told Jeremiah to write down the words He had been telling him to say, and then, have that scroll read to the king and his leaders. When that was done, the king burned the scroll in disgust. He did not want to hear God's Word. That sealed his death, and it spelled disaster for Jerusalem. All because they would not obey the clear Word of God. I pray that we do not fall into the same sin today as individuals and as a church.

In Hebrews 2 the Word of God is clear that Jesus became a man to die in our place so we could have our sins paid for and receive eternal salvation. Do you believe God's Word? It is not angels who are important, it is Jesus. If we neglect to believe in Him and follow His will, we have missed the clear will of God for all mankind. He has told us that in His Word, and now He is waiting to see what we will do. Have you confessed Christ as your personal Lord and Savior? Is He the king of your life? Do you walk with Him each day, having a constant conversation with Him? That is His will for each of us. He wants to save us and to help us live for Him each day.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Jeremiah 37-39 and Hebrews 3.
