August 25 - Jeremiah 51:33-64 and 52
As we finish reading Jeremiah today, there are several lessons for all of us. Chapter 51 ends with the declaration that God is the one who will take vengeance for Israel against Babylon. (v.36) This is part of God's character. He is the Just God, who will always make sure that vengeance is carried out in the correct way. We should never take vengeance into our own hands, because we are not fully just and wise, and we will mess it up. Then, we read in verse 56 that God is the God who always repays. If we ever think we are going to get away with any kind of sin or dishonesty, we are mistaken. God will always make sure that we receive the payment for our deeds.
When Jeremiah was finished delivering these words of prophecy against Babylon, he had them written down and given to one of the men who was going to be taken to Babylon for the exile. He instructed the man to read them to the people once he arrived. I believe this was God's way of encouraging the thousands of people who were taken to this strange place after a horrible siege and famine. God was letting them know that in the end Babylon would be destroyed, but they would return. To me it must have been like the book of Revelation is for us as Christians today. Even though we have to go through a lot of tribulation in this world, we know that in the end, Jesus wins, and we will be with Him in heaven. That should be a great comfort to all of us.
Tomorrow, I intend to read Lamentations 1 and 2.
