July 6 - Proverbs 18,19

The book of Proverbs has several categories of people that are addressed. We will call attention to some of these people as we read through the book. The one that stands out today is the "fool." Proverbs 18:2 tells us that a fool is a person who does not delight in understanding. In other words, the foolish person does not seek wisdom. Instead, a fool just wants to express what is in his own heart. Without a doubt, that is a very arrogant position to take. This causes the fool to bring about contention and even fighting. (18:6) The fool is constantly getting in trouble because of what he or she says. (18:7) This is an important truth because we learn in Proverbs 18:21 that "death and life are in the power of the tongue." Instead of being foolish, we should be slow to anger and seek understanding, not always wanting our way or to just speak what is in our hearts. (19:11)

One probing question from Proverbs 18:14b is very haunting, "But who can bear a broken spirit?" Do you know a child or an adult who has a broken spirit? It is very hard to bear it, and it is very difficult to restore it. However, God can renew our spirits if we will let Him. (Psalm 51)

Several of the verses in these two chapters speak about finding a wife and the blessing of having a prudent wife. I hope you know the importance of finding the right mate. Besides finding the Lord Jesus, there is no greater decision in life. Do not go about it in a casual manner. Seek God's choice for your life instead of seeking your choice. God knows who you need to complete you. Trust in His goodness and love for you.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Proverbs 20 and 21.
