Taking No Thought for the Future
The future is coming fast. Eternity will be here before you know it. I wonder what we are doing to prepare for the future? I am afraid that most people are just living to have as much pleasure as they can have for today. They are not really considering if what they are doing is pleasing to God or not. They are just doing what feels good. However, the consequences of those actions could be devastating to them.
The book of Lamentations is the weeping of the prophet Jeremiah over his beloved city of Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the Babylonians. He knew why it happened, but it still hurt a lot. (Lamentations 1:9) "She defiled herself with immorality and gave no thought for her future. Now she lies in the gutter with no one to lift her out. "Lord, see my misery," she cries. "The enemy has triumphed." We can learn a lot for our lives from this verse.
Doing immoral things can be very enjoyable for the moment. They can bring us temporary happiness, but the long term effects of going against God's will bring us down to destruction instead of eternal joy. The devil gets us to do those things by leading us not to take any thought of the future. He tempts our flesh to just have a good time. The truth is that one day we will stand before God and give an account of all the things we did in our life. That will be a terrible time of judgment if we don't take thought for our future and live by His will.
Just like Jerusalem was in the gutter with no one to lift her out, we will be in that place in our life. We will be in misery. The enemy, Satan, will have triumphed over us. He will have robbed us of the joys and satisfactions of life that God designed for us to have. Our only hope will be to call out to Jesus to save us and forgive our immorality. He will do that if we sincerely call to Him in faith, but we will have wasted most of our life. Therefore, all of us need to live every day giving thought for what our actions will bring us in the future.
