Finding Rest
Rest can be very illusive. What I mean by that is that people can look for genuine rest to relieve their fatigue and not find it. In fact, sometimes all of the searching makes things worse instead of better. We need rest for our body at times, so we sleep at night and take naps when needed. However, the greatest need for rest is what we need for our soul. It is when we have a weariness of heart, mind, and spirit. That kind of rest only comes from God.
The psalmist knew this so very well. God inspired him to show us the key to finding real rest. (Psalm 91:1) "Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty." It is a simple verse with a profound message. If we want to know where to find rest, we have to ask ourselves where we live. I don't mean a street address. I mean where does your heart, mind, and spirit reside all of the time? Let's dive into this for a minute.
God is always there for us 24/7. However, we have to decide to live in His shelter, to stay in His shadow. That means we have to make sure that we never get too far from the Lord. We must have our mind set on Him, so that we are thinking of Him continually, and asking Him to show us the way to go. Our heart must be desiring Him all of the time, so that we are praying without ceasing. Our spirit must be staying focused on the Lord so that we are sensitive to whatever He has for us. Then, we will rest from doing things our way, and we will have rest from God.
Jesus said almost the same thing. He told all of us who are weary and heavy laden to come to Him for rest. He advised us to take His yoke upon us and learn of Him, because His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Then, we will be able to navigate life well, without the stress, because we are depending on God and doing things His way, which is always the best way. That reduces the problems, so we can relax and rest in Him.
