Being Unaware of Our Sins

Sometimes we do or say things that we know are wrong. We may not know they are wrong right when we do or say them, but when we atop to think about it, we know we have sinned. Then, we can confess that sin and be cleansed from it. At other times we do and say things that are wrong, but we are unaware that they are wrong. I am afraid this happens to a lot of us on a regular basis, and we are not aware of the consequences of these actions.

The Bible is very clear on this issue. (Leviticus 5:17) "Suppose you sin by violating one of the Lord's commands. Even if you are unaware of what you have done, you are guilty and will be punished for your sin." Some of us might question the Lord over this, but let's consider why God does things this way. I believe it will make sense when we think about it correctly.

I believe some of us just do what we think is right. We do not give any thought about God's commands. Sometimes we do these things as a habit. It is kind of like we are on autopilot. We don't even think about what we are saying or doing. In those cases we sin most of the time because our ways are not God's ways and our thoughts are not God's thoughts. Therefore, we are guilty of sin, and we will be punished by God. God's punishment is His way to get our attention, so we will live by His commands and see how much better it is to do life His way.

Then, there is another angle, too. If God let us off for the sins we commit because we are ignorant of His commands, He would be giving us incentive not to study His Word. We could think that ignorance is an excuse, so we deliberately quit studying the Bible. That is a terrible way to think. God punishes us for those sins to drive us to the Bible. Then, we will learn how to walk on the narrow way that leads to heaven. That is the best way for anyone to live, and God knows that.
