Looking for a City

When Chris and I were dating, we had a great time singing old gospel songs with the other young people at Fork Creek Baptist Church in Ellenwood. We had a lot of favorite songs, but one of the best was "Looking for a City." The song is about having a longing for heaven. It is about a place where we will never die. There we will see our loved ones who have gone before us, and we will have a glorious time in the presence of the Lord.

The song is based on what the Bible says in Hebrews 11. Those who were faithful to the Lord went through many tribulations, but they kept going, because they knew this earth was not their final home. (Hebrews 11:16) They desired a better country, a heavenly country. Therefore, God was not ashamed to be called their God, for He had prepared a city for them. I believe the same should hold true for Christians today and that God still feels the same way.

Now, I am not sitting around having morbid thoughts, and I am not depressed about my life, but I do have a longing for heaven. I would not be sad, at all, if Jesus called us home today. If today is my day to die, so be it. I am ready to meet Jesus and to walk the streets of gold. I am just passing through this world on the way to that city, and I don't understand Christians who don't have that desire. What could be better than being in heaven with our Lord and those who have gone before us?

The Lord knows our hearts, and I believe this verse is referring to God not being ashamed of those who long for heaven because He knows our hearts are not set on Him and on what is best, if we don't have that desire. I am not talking about giving up and just waiting to die. No, never; we are to be faithfully serving our Lord until He comes, or we go to be with Him. However, we should live every day knowing that this world will never satisfy us, and God has something much better around the corner. When that is our constant hope, it pleases our Lord to call us His children.

Tomorrow, I intend to read Hebrews 12-13 and James 1.
