Our Mighty and Tender God
One of the most touching and tender things we will ever see is when a parent is singing softly over their child. It could be a lullaby to help calm them down for sleep, or it could be a simple love song. The same could be said for a man who serenades his sweetheart. He shows her just how much she is a part of his life and in his heart. I wonder if we realize that is what God does for us, as His children? It should make a difference in how we think about God.
The prophet Zephaniah gives us a wonderful description of God. (Zephaniah 3:17) He is the Lord our God. He is with us, and He is the Mighty One, who will save us. In all of His power and might He rejoices over us with gladness. He quiets us with His love, and He rejoices over us with singing. That is a blessed picture of our mighty and tender Father. Oh, how He loves us!
God is the One who saved us by His grace. We could not earn our salvation by our works or pay for our salvation with any amount of money. Still, He is so glad that we are His children that He rejoices over us with gladness. He is so glad that we have a personal relationship with Him. He loves to talk with us and to guide us in our lives. He is always with us.
When we have fears or troubles, He is there to quiet us with His love. He comes to assure us that everything will be alright because we belong to Him. He shows us that we don't need to have any fear and we can always overcome by His power. Then, we can imagine His tender voice rejoicing over us with singing, just like that earthly parent singing over his or her child. Yes, He is the Mighty One, but He is also very tender and loving toward His own.
