A Counselor and a Friend

As I wrote the other day, we all need each other for support and strength in times of trouble. However, even on regular days we need the advice and care from the people around us. Many times this is what we receive from our family members, but we need others also. We need counsel about all kinds of things, and we need some friends to care for us and to be there for us, too.

David was a wise king. He ruled Israel well with justice and good judgment. He couldn't do it all by himself. (I Chronicles 27:33) Ahithophel was counselor to the king, and Hushai, the Archite, was the king's friend. If David needed a counselor and a friend, so do we.

We need a counselor to give us an objective view of what is happening to us. We are subjective when it comes to thinking about what is happening to us. We need someone else, who loves us and who can be detached from what is going on to tell us the truth. Then, we can see God's will more clearly and do the right thing at the right time. It is important for us to have a wise counselor who knows the Lord and His truth.

We need a friend who will watch out for us. A friend tells us when we need to slow down and rest. A friend tells us when we need to relax. A friend takes time to talk with us and enjoy life together. Friendship multiplies our satisfaction in life. Again, our family can be our counselors and friends, but we need others also.
