Being Put to the Test

Tests may not be fun for us, but they are very helpful. Tests are used to show us how much we have learned and how much we have not learned. They are a tool for evaluating things in our lives. God knows this, and He puts us to the test for our own good. His tests are the most important tests we will ever take.

Moses reminded the people of Israel of this truth after they had wandered in the wilderness. (Deuteronomy 8:2) He told them that they would remember all the way which the Lord their God had led them in the wilderness for forty years in order to humble them and to put them to the test to know what was in their heart and whether they would keep His commandments or not. We should stop and do the same thing.

We all have wilderness experiences. They could be times of sadness or times of pain. In any event we are humbled before God because we see our needs and limitations. God allows these times, or He sends us into these times to humble us. They cause us to admit to Him that we can't overcome our obstacles on our own. We must look to Him for His help.

These trials of life show us what is in our heart. If we have true faith in God, the troubles will cause us to trust Him more, not to turn on Him in anger. Therefore, we need to look back in our lives to see how we did when we were put to the test by God. This time of honest evaluation should help us keep God's commandments even better than before.
